Make Firefox Use Native Notifications In Linux With GNotifier
Quick tip for Firefox users: GNotifier is a Firefox extension that makes the browser use native notifications on the Linux desktop. The extension currently supports GNOME (Shell), Unity, KDE and Xfce.
Below you can see a Firefox notification in action using GNotifier, under Unity and GNOME Shell:
Besides regular notifications, like the one displayed when a file is downloaded, the extension also supports the standard webkitNotification API (for instance, receiving notifications on new emails in Gmail) - to use this feature, Firefox needs an user script like THIS (you'll need Greasemonkey extension to install user scripts).
Get native Linux desktop notifications in Firefox with GNotifier
To install GNotifier Firefox extension, visit its page and click "Add to Firefox": GNotifier @ Firefox Addons.
The extension should start working immediately, without having to restart the browser.

Get Firefox And Phonon-GStreamer To Support H.264 In Ubuntu 14.04 [Updated]
The FFmpeg plugin for GStreamer 0.10 is not available in the official Ubuntu 14.04 repositories and because of this, Firefox doesn't support the H.264 codec.
Furthermore, without the FFmpeg plugin for GStreamer 0.10 package, KDE apps can't play H.264 videos in Kubuntu 14.04 if they use the GStreamer backend. Another issue with this is that Amarok can't play WMA files. There might also be other affected applications.
The bug was reported on Launchpad and it's not yet known if it will be fixed. Until (if) it's fixed, here's a work-around you can use to get Firefox and KDE apps that use the GStreamer backend to support H.264 in Ubuntu 14.04: basically, all you have to do is install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg by using a PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mc3man/trusty-media
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
Here's the YouTube HTML5 page under Firefox in Ubuntu 14.04, before and after installing gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:

KDE Connect Indicator: Use KDE Connect On Desktop Environments That Use AppIndicators (Unity, Pantheon, Etc.)
KDE Connect is a tool which allows you integrate the KDE Plasma Workspace with your smartphone (Android only for now), via WiFi.
With the help of KDE Connect Indicator, you can now use KDE Connect in desktops which support Ubuntu AppIndicators, such as Unity, Pantheon (elementary OS), Xfce (Xubuntu) and so on.
For those who aren't familiar with KDE Connect, here's a quick list of features for the latest version (0.7.3 at the time I'm writing this article):
- display notifications from your Android device on your desktop (requires Android 4.3+);
- send files from your Android device to your desktop and the other way around "without wires";
- touchpad emulation: use your phone screen as your computer's touchpad (keyboard emulation is also available);
- shared clipboard between your phone and computer;
- display your phone's battery status on the desktop;
- multimedia remote control: use your Android device to control various Linux media players;
- RSA Encryption.
Most of the KDE Connect features are available as plugins and they can be enabled/disabled from the Android app (by clicking on the device name and then choose "Select plugins" from the app menu).
Here are a couple of KDE Connect Android app screenshots:
The indicator itself comes with the following features:
- displays the device name, status and battery level;
- menu item to request for pairing and unpairing;
- menu item to start sftp and open the file browser.
KDE Connect Indicator also ships with "kdeconnect-send", a small command line tool to send files to your device - this can be used to create Nautilus or Thunar actions to easily send a file from your desktop to your mobile device via right click (to do this, you'd need to create an action which uses "kdeconnect-send %f" as the command).
Furthermore, KDE Connect Indicator comes with a Contractor file, allowing elementary OS users to send files to their Android devices from any elementary OS app.
While I tested KDE Connect Indicator under Ubuntu 14.10 (w/ Unity) and it works great, there are a some limitations right now:
- you can only pair the device by sending the request from the desktop (I'll add instructions below) - that's because Unity (and some other DEs) don't support clicking on notifications to accept or reject the pairing request;
- KDE Connect Indicator depends on KDE Connect (obviously), which depends on quite a few KDE packages that will be installed even though you're not using KDE. Unfortunately there's no way around this.
It's also important to note that KDE Connect Indicator is a new project (about 2 weeks old) and while I didn't encounter any issues with it, you might find bugs. Report any bugs you may encounter (or suggestions) @ GitHub. Report bugs with KDE Connect @ KDE.
Configuring KDE Connect Indicator
1. To be able to use KDE Connect Indicator, you'll have to pair your Android device with your Linux desktop. To to this, launch KDE Connect Indicator on your desktop and KDE Connect on your mobile device (both need to be connected to the same network).
2. Once KDE Connect Indicator detects your mobile device (it does this automatically), a new AppIndicator should show up on your desktop:
From the KDE Connect Indicator menu, select "Request pairing" and then on your phone, accept the pairing request.
Like I was saying above, currently you can only pair the device by sending the request from the desktop (via the KDE Connect Indicator menu) so don't try send the pair request from the mobile device as it won't work.
3. Optional: to get the notifications from your Android device to be displayed on your desktop, open the KDE Connect Android app, click on the device name (under "Connected devices") and at the bottom you should see something like this: "Plugins failed to load (tap for more info): Notification sync" - here, click on "Notification sync" and follow the instructions to enable notifications sync between your phone and desktop.
How to install KDE Connect Indicator and the latest KDE Connect in Ubuntu
Important: Like I mentioned above, installing KDE Connect will drag quite a few KDE dependencies. If later on you want to remove KDE Connect and KDE Connect Indicator, you may want to save the list of packages which are installed by running the install command below, and remove those packages when you remove KDE Connect ("apt-get autoremove" won't work).
Here's the list of packages that are installed along with indicator-kdeconnect and kdeconnect on a fresh Ubuntu 14.10 machine - non-KDE packages included (but these may be different for your, depending on what you've already installed).
Ubuntu / elementary OS (there are packages for Ubuntu 14.04, 14.10 and 15.04 only - and the corresponding eOS version of course) and derivatives users can install KDE Connect Indicator and the latest version of KDE Connect by using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:vikoadi/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install indicator-kdeconnect kdeconnect
Next, install the KDE Connect Android App.

Lubuntu 14.04
Lubuntu is a lightweight Ubuntu flavor which uses the LXDE desktop environment, useful for old computers.
Changes in Lubuntu 14.04:
- PcManFM was updated with many new features, like:
- dual pane view (can be toggled from the menu or by using F3);
- menu editing;
- desktop accessibility;
- tooltips for desktop items;
- separated desktop configuration for each monitor;
- implemented saving of columns;
- new tab with Search Results now opened in Detailed List View mode with columns: Name, Description, Location, Size, Modified. Since Search Results is a special folder, its layout should be other than default;
- added support for per-folder configurations: sort mode, show_hidden, and view mode;
- the toolbar is now configurable (can also be completely hidden);
- added API to create third-party plugins that may append own text to the statusbar text for selected files;
- complete changelog;
- new lxsession-default-apps with a new user interface;
- updated artwork (GTK and icon theme, wallpaper);

Ubuntu GNOME 14.04
Ubuntu GNOME is an Ubuntu flavor which tries to bring a pure GNOME experience in the Ubuntu "family". It uses GNOME Shell by default and this release ships with GNOME 3.10 for the most part (GNOME Shell 3.10, Nautilus 3.10, etc.).
Changes in Ubuntu GNOME 14.04:
- Most GNOME 3.10 is included: GNOME Shell, GTK, Nautilus, Gedit, etc. GNOME 3.10 includes new features such as:
- the old system status menus have been replaced with a new System Menu which includes brightness and sound sliders, quick access to wireless networks, battery status as well as settings, lock screen and shutdown buttons;
- improved login and lock screens: better layout, nicer transitions, prettier lock screen notifications, etc.;
- pagination in the Activities application picker;
- "header bars" or "client side decorations" are now used in some applications such as Files (Nautilus);
- new zoom mode for the scrollbars which allow for fine scrolling - to use it, hold SHIFT while clicking on the scrollbar thumb;
- Tweak Tool was redesigned for GNOME 3.10 and includes new options such as startup, application management, etc.
- it's important to note that the GNOME 3.10 System Settings changes are not available in Ubuntu GNOME 3.10 because it uses GNOME Control Center 3.6.3 and GNOME Settings Daemon 3.8.6, and not the 3.10 release.
- While not installed by default, GNOME Weather, Maps, Photos and Music are all available in the official repositories.
- A community wallpapers package is included by default;
- the GNOME Classic session is included by default - to use it, select it from the Sessions option on the login screen.
Here are a few Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 screenshots:

Thunderbird is a free email application that's easy to set up and customize - and it's loaded with great features!
Sending and receiving emails is like breathing these days, and you will need a reliable and extremely stable application to do it right. Mozilla Thunderbird is one of those rare applications that provides users with a feature-rich, easy to use and extendable email client. Besides begin an email client, the software is also a very good RSS news reader, as well as a newsgroup and chat client. It is supported and installed by default in many Linux operating systems.
Features at a glance
Among some of its major highlights, we can mention adaptive junk mail controls, saved search folders, global inbox support, message grouping, privacy protection, and comprehensive mail migration from other email clients.
Mozilla Thunderbird is designed to be very comprehensive. It will help users communicate better in an office space, allowing them to send, received emails, chat with their colleagues, and stay updated with the latest news.
Few know that the application provides users with a built-in web browser functionality, using a tabbed user interface and based on its bigger brother, the powerful Mozilla Firefox web explorer. Another interesting feature is the ability to add extensions, popularly known as add-ons, which will extended the default functionality of the application.
What New in Mozilla Thunderbird 38.0.1 :
- GMail supports OAuth2 authentication, removing the need to manually select "allow less secure applications" in Google options for the account.
- Ship Lightning calendar addon with Thunderbird and enable with an opt-out dialog
- Filter sent messages
- Filter messages when archived
- Enable search in multiple/all address books
- Add support for Yahoo Messenger in Chat

- Add reading position marker line to conversations
- The editor for twitter should show inputtable character count
Installation instructions:
Mozilla does not provide a repository for Thunderbird, but the installation steps are quite easy anyway and should not create difficulties on any Linux distribution.
The latest versions of Firefox are available as pre-compiled libraries via the Mozilla FTP, so we need to download the archive (i386 or i686 for 32 bit systems and amd64 or x86_64 for 64 bit systems), extract it and run the thunderbird file. Also, it is advised to remove previous versions of Thunderbird, move Thunderbird to /opt and create a symlink, for an easier usage.
The below instructions should work on all the popular Linux systems, including Ubuntu 15.04 vivid Vervet, ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr (LTS), Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS, Elementary OS, Deepin, Peppermint, LXLE, Linux Lite, Debian 8 "jessie", Debian 7 "wheezy", Debian 6 "squeeze", Robolinux, SparkyLinux, Fedora 22, Fedora21, Fedora 20, CentOS 7, CentOS 6, OpenSUSE 13.2, OpenSUSE 13.1, Mageia 5, OpenMandriva, Arch Linux, Manjaro, ROSA Desktop etc
