Linux Mint 17.2 "Rafaela" out now and Available for Download

Linux Mint 17.2 is a long term support release which will be supported until 2019. It comes with updated software and brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop experience more comfortable to use.

Linux Mint is an open source project that provides users with a completely free and easy to use operating system based on one of the most popular free distributions of Linux, Ubuntu. It includes a plethora of applications for common daily tasks.

The best way to describe the Linux Mint operating system is to image a virtual container where we can install one of the Cinnamon or MATE desktop environments on top of a stable base of Ubuntu, and then add some tweaks and in-house built applications.

Linux Mint is known for being a very user-friendly distribution of Linux used by hundreds of thousands of people, especially those who hate the Unity user interface of Canonical’s Ubuntu operating system.

The project is distributed as separate Cinnamon and MATE editions, each one being available for download as Live DVD ISO images that can be deployed on both 64-bit and 32-bit architectures. Users can write the ISO images to USB sticks or blank DVD discs and boot the live environment from either one instead of installing it.

The boot medium has been engineered to boot automatically in 10 seconds, but advanced users can press any key to access the boot menu, which enables them to run a memory test or start an existing operating system from the local disk drive.

The same bootsplash software that is implemented in Ubuntu is also used in Linux Mint, but customized with the distribution’s logo. It is very important to mention here that both Cinnamon and MATE desktop environments are created by the Linux Mint developers.

Other improvements

The USB Image Writer and the USB Stick Formatter now recognize a wider variety of USB sticks. They also feature improvements in terms of partitions alignment, boot flags. Sticks are better described and the tools also now use less CPU than they did before..
LibreOffice was upgraded to version 4.4.3.
HPLIP was upgraded to version 3.15.2, for more HP printers to be recognized and supported.
HAL was reintroduced to support DRM playback in Adobe Flash (note that this helps with certain video websites, but not all of them, a tutorial was written to workaround other DRM/Flash issues)
In the repositories, Inkscape was upgraded to version 0.91.

Main components

Linux Mint 17.2 features Cinnamon 2.6, MDM 2.0, a Linux kernel 3.16 and an Ubuntu 14.04 package base.

LTS strategy

Linux Mint 17.2 will receive security updates until 2019.
Until 2016, future versions of Linux Mint will use the same package base as Linux Mint 17.2, making it trivial for people to upgrade.
Until 2016, the development team won't start working on a new base and will be fully focused on this one.

A Slackware-based Linux distribution that provides support for several Wi-Fi hardware

Wifislax is an open source Linux operating system based and inspired by the Slackware Linux distribution. It’s main goal is to support the latest Wi-Fi technologies. The system provides out-of-the-box support for a wide range of wireless and wired network cards. In addition, it contains a large number of security and forensics tools, which transforms it into a pentesting (penetration testing) distro.

Wifislax 4.10 changelog :

Much of the development has been dedicated to creating scripts "updaters / installers", with which anyone can update parts of the system, including the kernel, or install software that will be interesting for various types, "libraries" "office" "pentest "" audit "" multimedia "... there is a little bit of everything.

Distributed as a dual-arch Live CD

It is distributed as a single Live CD ISO image that can run on both 64-bit and 32-bit CPUs. It integrates various unofficial network drivers, directly into the Linux kernel provided by the Slackware project.

Boot options

The boot menu is quite different from the ones used in other Linux distributions. For example, it includes two entries for running the live environment with a normal or PAE kernel (useful if you have more than 4GB of RAM), a hardware detection tool, a memory testing tool, and support for qwerty keyboards.

When pressing on one of the two kernel options for running the live environment, users will be presented with many other options, including Wifislax with KDE (persistent or not), Wifislax with Xfce (persistent or not), text mode, copy to RAM, safe graphics mode, and ACPI Off.

Uses the KDE Plasma desktop environment

Booting into the KDE environment, with persistent mode enabled to save your session, seams to be the best choice for the new Wifislax user. It provides a familiar user interface, with popular open source applications, such as the Mozilla Firefox web browser, ISO Master, XMMS audio player, and SMPlayer video player.

Since the system carries scripts to install / upgrade almost everything, put only the fatter modules or that do not have an install script.

Bodhi Linux 3.0.0 RC2 Reloaded is out, Enlightened Linux distribution Build from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Bodhi is an open source Linux distribution built around the Enlightenment desktop environment and based on the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu Linux. It is a customizable and minimalistic distribution that combines the beauty of the Enlightenment desktop with a great collection of applications and package management utilities.

Bodhi is well known for providing users with the latest builds of the lightweight and elegant Enlightenment desktop environment. The desktop is comprised only of a dock, which is placed on the upper part of the screen. The dock can be used to quickly switch between virtual workspaces, change the system locale, access the network connections, modify the volume, update the system, or access the applications and settings.

Default applications on Bodhi Linux 3.0.0 RC2 Reloaded

Default applications include only the Midori web browser, Leafpad text editor, Synaptic Package Manager, and EConnMan connection manager. There are also various Enlightenment applications, such as the powerful and complex Terminology terminal emulator, Enlightenment file manager, eDeb package installer, eCcess system tool, eSudo and a screenshot utility.

ClearOS Community 6.6.0 is released, An Open Source, free and powerful network and gateway Linux server operating system

ClearOS Community (formerly ClarkConnect) is an open source operating system based on the CentOS Linux server distribution and designed for small organizations and distributed environments. It provides users with a very powerful cloud-connected server, gateway and network OS.

What's new in ClearOS Community 6.6.0:

To install the distribution, the user must choose a language, select between basic and specialized storage devices, choose a hostname and timezone, set up the root (system administrator) password, as well as to select an installation type and install the boot loader. A graphical installer is provided for the entire installation process.

After installation, a welcome screen will prompt users to configure the network interfaces, as well as to offer them instructions on how to connect to the web-based interface. Supported web browsers include Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, Internet Explorer and Safari.

Tux Hat Linux 2.3 is released, Linux Live OS that uses the Fluxbox window manager

Tux Hat Linux is an open source distro, a distribution of Linux, based on the award winning Debian GNU/Linux operating system and built around the minimal Fluxbox window manager.

As mentioned the default and only desktop environment of this Debian-based operating system is Fluxbox, a minimal window manager that comprises of a single panel located on the upper side of the screen, from where the user can interact with running programs or cycle between virtual workspaces, and a system monitoring panel on the bottom edge of the screen.

PLoP Linux 4.3.0 released, A small and lightweight distribution of Linux designed for system rescue operations

PLoP Linux is an independent and completely free distribution of Linux built around the PLoP Boot Manager software and designed from the ground up to be used for general system rescue and data recovery operations.

It distributed in two editions, supporting 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms

The project offers the choice between Live CDs without an X11 display server and Live DVDs with a graphical session. While both of them are supported on 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms, the main difference is that the Live CDs have approximately 100MB in size each, while the Live DVDs have 1GB in size each.

Includes NTFS read/write support and numerous useful utilities

The PLoP Linux distribution comes with NTFS-3G, which provides out-of-the-box support for reading and writing from NTFS disk drives. This means that will be able to rescue broken Windows operating system or recover data from damaged NTFS partitions.

It also includes numerous useful utilities, such as Partimage to save or restore disk partitions, TFTP and ProFTPD file transfer servers, Samba for sharing files on the network and connect to Windows shares, FSArchiver for saving the contents of a filesystem to a compressed archive, and a DHCP server.

Offers built-in support for IDE, SATA, SCSI and RAID devices

It is also very important to mention here that PLoP Linux offers built-in support for IDE, SATA, SCSI and RAID devices, along with support for SSH (Secure Shell) and NFS (Network File-System) connections, TestDisk and PhotoRec data rescue tools, as well as support for accessing encrypted partitions.

Linux siduction 14.1.0 is released with six desktop environments

The siduction distribution is a desktop-oriented operating system and live medium based on the "unstable" branch of Debian GNU/Linux. Forked from aptosid in late 2011, siduction offers three separate live media with KDE, LXDE and Xfce desktops. The project also promises regular releases, an open development model, and friendly relationship with its developer and user community.

Ferdinand Thommes has announced the release of siduction 14.1.0, a set of Debian-based desktop Linux distributions with separate Cinnamon, GNOME, KDE, LXDE, LXQt and Xfce editions: "We are very happy to present the final release of siduction 2014.1 'Indian Summer'. siduction is a distribution based on Debian’s unstable branch and we try to release a few new snapshots over the course of each year. For 2014 it will be just this final release. siduction 2014.1 ships with six desktop environments - KDE SC, Xfce, LXDE, LXQt, GNOME and Cinnamon, all in 32-bit and 64-bit variants." siduction 2014.1 – Indian Summer is shipped with six desktop environments: KDE SC, XFCE, LXDE, LXQt, GNOME and Cinnamon, all in 32- and 64-bit variants. From the included DEs this time around only LXDE fits on a CD with 700 MegaByte. But as CDs become more irrelevant with every day, we are not too worried about this and recommend to use USB-Sticks for installation.

The released images are a snapshot of Debian unstable, that also goes by the name of Sid, from 2014-11-22. They are enhanced with some useful packages and scripts, our own installer and a custom patched version of the linux-kernel 3.17, accompanied by X-Server 1.16.1.

Besides those desktop environments we also include noX, which is an environment without X. There is, last, but not least, an image that listens to the name of Xorg and it features the minimal window manager Fluxbox on top of X.

Tails is a live system that aims to preserve your privacy and anonymity. It helps you to use the Internet anonymously and circumvent censorship almost anywhere you go and on any computer but leaving no trace unless you ask it to explicitly.

Distributed as a dual-arch Live CD

Currently, the distribution is available for download for free on Softpedia as a dual-arch Live CD ISO image that fits perfectly on a CD disc and supports both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms. The ISO image can also be written on a USB flash drive, which can be used to boot the operating system from the BIOS of a PC.

Greenie Linux Desktop Edition 14.04.5, operating system designed for Linux users in Czech Republic and Slovakia

Greenie Linux is an open source distribution of Linux based on the world's most popular free operating system, Ubuntu Linux, and designed from the ground up to be used by home users in Slovakia and Czech Republic. It uses the LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Project) as its default desktop environment.

What's New in version 14.04.1 :

At approximately 1GB we put kernel 3.13, LXDE environment, few common programs (VLC, Firefox, etc) and of course those, which were the reason this system was built.
New Greenie, named internally as "MoReWrite", which is a strange acronym of "Modify, Read and Write" focuses mostly on e-books and documents.
If you read books, edit, write, translate or convert them, all needed tools are on this single medium. Including Slovak and Czech language packs.
From tools we can mention LibreOffice suite, PDF viewer (incl. programs for editing PDF), programs for undisturbed writing, converting various kinds of e-books and all for production of a book from creating cover and formatting to testing on e-readers.
Calibre, Sigil, FbReader, Geany and more programs will definitely suit someone who takes books at least somewhat seriously.
Of course it is possible to use Greenie as a completely normal system, which runs on less powerful computers. 32bit edition is prepared, which requires at least 256MB ram (at least 512 is a much better choice) for proper functioning.
Greenie e-book is based on Lubuntu 14.04 LTS. We also managed to fit a few games, console tools and our tiny pearl is adding some PPA repositories and fonts.

Availability, supported architectures and boot options

The distribution is available for download as a single Live DVD ISO image that can be easily written to a USB flash drive of 1GB or bigger, or burned onto a blank DVD disc using any CD/DVD burning software. Both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures are supported at this time.

From the boot prompt, users will be able to try the operating system without installing it, check the media for defects (only if using a CD disc), run a memory diagnostic test, boot an existing OS, as well as to directly install the distribution, without testing it, which is not recommended.

Koha Live DVD 3.16 released, A Xubuntu-based Linux operating system

Koha Live DVD is a freely distributed operating system based on the popular Xubuntu Linux distribution and built around the Koha open source ILS (Integrated Library System). It uses a classic GNOME 2 session as its default and only desktop environment.

Traditional desktop environment powered by GNOME

As mentioned, the default and only desktop environment of Koha Live DVD is GNOME 2, providing users with a traditional graphical desktop session that uses a two-panel layout. While you can easily interact with running programs from the bottom panel, it is possible to quickly launch applications from the top panel.

A standard suite of open source applications

There's nothing spectacular on the application front, as the distribution comes with a standard suite of open source apps and desktop tools, among which we can mention Mozilla Firefox, LibreOffice, Gwibber, Transmission, Empathy, Remmina, Brasero, Totem, Rhythmbox, Orca, BleachBit, Shotwell, Simple Scan, and Leafpad.

Chakra GNU/Linux is a user-friendly and powerful distribution and live CD originally forked from Arch Linux. It features a graphical installer, automatic hardware detection and configuration, the latest KDE desktop, and a variety of tools and extras.

The Chakra team is happy to announce the second release of the Chakra Euler series, which follows the KDE Applications and Platform 4.14 releases.

The main reason for providing this new ISO, in addition to providing a new KDE release, is that Chakra has now implemented the /usr merge changes. If you already have Chakra installed on your system manual intervention is needed, so please follow the instructions on how to properly update. For new installations using this ISO, this is of course not needed.
