Foxit PDF Reader Sees New Linux Release
Foxit PDF Reader for Linux was updated recently, after years of no new releases. The new version brings support for opening PDFs in tabs, annotations and more.
Foxit Reader is a popular free to use (but proprietary) PDF viewer available for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. Compared to the Windows version, Foxit PDF Reader for Linux lacks some features - most importantly, the ability to create PDF files, but the app still has quite a few useful features.
The latest Foxit Reader for Linux features a new user interface as well as new features such as annotations (called commenting tools in Foxit), multiple views, bookmarks, printing both the documents and annotations (you can print the document, the documment with annotations or just the annotations) and more.
Among the available "comment tools" are highlighting text, underline, strikeout, replace or insert text, add a note or draw using a pencil (and erase):
For the comments, you can choose from various icons such as an arrow, pointer, cross, star and more, useful for both adding notes for yourself or for collaboration.
I should also mention that in my test, the application was able to open a large PDF file (which contains a large number of images) very quickly and it allowed me to scroll through it easily, without any lag, as opposed to Evince for instance, which took 1-2 seconds to load new pages, so as far as performance is concerned, Foxit Reader works great.
If you're looking for an open source PDF reader that can open large PDF files quickly, check out MuPDF.

Unfortunately there's no official changelog for the latest Foxit PDF Reader for Linux so I can't tell you what's new under the hood.

Modify PDF Files In Linux With Master PDF Editor
Master PDF Editor is a multi-platform application written in Qt that allows you to create, edit and encrypt PDF and XPS files. The tool can be used to modify or add text, insert images, split, merge or delete pages from PDF files as well as for annotating PDFs, adding sticky notes and much more.
Master PDF Editor is not open source software. The Linux version is free for non-commercial use while the Windows version requires a License ($49.95) after 30 days.
Master PDF Editor features:
- Change every element of a PDF File;
- Create new PDF and XPS files or edit existing ones;
- Add and/or edit bookmarks in PDF files;
- Encrypt and/or protect PDF files using 128 bit encryption;
- Convert XPS files into PDF;
- Add UI controls such as buttons, checkboxes, lists, etc. to PDFs;
- Highlight text, add sticky notes;
- Import/export PDF pages into common graphical formats, including BMP, JPG, PNG, and TIFF;
- Split and Merge PDF files;
- Move Pages.
In my test, the application was very fast at loading PDF files and I was able to add, remove or change text and images without messing the original PDF formatting (for instance, when importing the same PDF file in LibreOffice Draw, the formatting was messed up).
Download Master PDF Editor
Ubuntu users can install Master PDF Editor by using Ubuntu Software Center: either search for it in Ubuntu Software Center or click the button below to install it:
However, the version available in Ubuntu Software Center is a bit old so if you want to install the latest version, head over to the official Master PDF website to download it - Ubuntu deb file are available.
Arch Linux users can install Master PDF Editor via AUR.
For other Linux distributions, see the Master PDF Editor Linux downloads page - you'll find binaries (RPM and a a generic package) that should work on most Linux distributions.

Note-Taking / PDF Annotation Tool `Xournal` 0.4.8 Released With New Export To PDF Code, Other Changes
Xournal was updated to version 0.4.8 today, bringing new Export to PDF code, a horizontal view mode along with other changes.
For those not familiar with Xournal, this is a GTK+ application for note-taking, sketching, keeping a journal using a stylus on Tablet PCs and other platforms.
The application comes with various tools such as: pen, eraser, highlighter, text tool and shape recognizer. Additionally, strokes and blocks of text can be selected, moved and copied using a rectangular selection tool. Besides taking notes or sketching, these tools can be used to annotate PDF files (it uses the Poppler library to render PDF documents) which can be saved either in native Xournal file format or exported to PDF.
Xournal 0.4.8, released today, includes some new features / changes such as:
- new Export to PDF code using Cairo (+ config option to prefer old code in the options menu > Legacy PDF Export) which should fix various issues;
- optional auto-save of documents and recovery from auto-saves;
- a horizontal view mode (pages are shown next to each other horizontally);
- add "new pages duplicate background" option;
- various bug-fixes and configuration options for touchscreen devices;
- smoother icons for eraser and shapes buttons.
Install Xournal 0.4.8 in Ubuntu or Linux Mint
Xournal is available in the official Ubuntu repositories, but it's not the latest 0.4.8 version (Ubuntu 14.10, 14.04 and 13.10 have Xournal 0.4.7 and Ubuntu 12.04 has Xournal 0.4.6). If you don't care for the features in the latest 0.4.8 release, simply install the package from the Ubuntu repositories by searching for Xournal in the Ubuntu Software Center.
The latest Xournal 0.4.8 can be installed in Ubuntu or Linux Mint (and derivatives) by using the main failsdownloads PPA. Add the PPA and install Xournal by using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/failsdownloads
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xournal
If you don't want to add the PPA, you can grab the Xournal deb from HERE.Note: the Ubuntu / Debian Xournal maintainer accidentally (?) used "4.7" as the version number for Xournal 0.4.7 from the Ubuntu 14.04 and 13.10 repositories so to receive the update from the failsdownloads PPA, I had to use "4.8" as the version instead of 0.4.8.
For other Linux distributions, grab Xournal from SourceForge.
