Spotify For Linux Gets A Refreshed User Interface, Other Changes

Spotify is a music streaming service that comes with native clients for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux as well as mobile devices such as iOS, Android, BlackBerry, etc.

The service is available in quite a few countries, including US, UK, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Norway, Netherlands and more - see the Spotify Geographic availability @ Wikipedia.

Spotify 0.9.10 linux

The native Spotify Linux client was updated to version 0.9.10 recently, which introduces a new darker theme, refreshed typography and rounded iconography. There are also some Linux-specific changes:
  • Track change notifications via libnotify;
  • OpenSSL is now version 1.0.x;
  • Local files playback works with libavcodec54;

Unfortunately, the new 0.9.10 release is only available for 64bit, at least for now. There are some issues too - for instance, it doesn't work to drag from an HTML5 view to a legacy view (such as the sidebar).

Also, some users have reported issues with the track change notifications - if you're experiencing such problems, open a terminal and start the Spotify Linux client using the following command:
spotify --ui.track_notifications_enabled=false

Install Spotify In Ubuntu via PPA [version 0.9.10 is only available on 64bit for now!]

To add the official Spotify Ubuntu repository and install the native Spotify Linux (Qt) client, use the following commands:
sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://repository.spotify.com/ stable non-free" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list'
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 94558F59
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install spotify-client
(an older Spotify version is available for 32bit)

For other Linux distributions, see the installation instructions from HERE. (note that the repository line from those instructions is not correct and will cause apt-get to fail on Ubuntu - use the above instructions instead if you use Ubuntu)

It's also worth mentioning that the Spotify Ambiance theme (and any other custom theme for that matter) doesn't work with the latest Spotify Linux client.

Pandora Client `Pithos` 1.1.0 And 1.0.2 Released

Two new Pithos versions were released yesterday: 1.1.0 (for GTK 3.14+ only) and 1.0.2 and they include an important bug fix which caused the app to stop playing randomly.

Pithos

Pithos is a Pandora.com (a music streaming and recommendation service that's only available in the United States, Australia and New Zealand) client which comes with pretty much everything you'd need in such an application, like:
  • cover art;
  • thumbs up / thumbs down / tired of this song options;
  • allows switching between Pandora stations;
  • allows editing QuickMix and creating stations;
  • desktop integration: Ubuntu AppIndicator, notifications, MPRIS v2 support - so Pithos integrates with the Ubuntu Sound Menu / GNOME Shell Mediaplayer extension;
  • media keys support;
  • proxy support;
  • last.fm scrobbling.

Pithos 1.1.0, which requires GTK 3.14 or newer (Ubuntu 15.04, Fedora 21 and newer), was released yesterday and it coms with redesigned plugin preferences, performance improvements, the MPRIS and Last.fm plugins are now optional and various other tweaks.

However, the most important change in this release is a fix for a major bug that caused the app to stop playing randomly. Because Pithos 1.1.0 requires GTK 3.14, this fix was backported to the Pithos 1.0.x series, which needs GTK 3.10+ (so it works with Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10, Fedora 20, etc.).

Install Pithos in Ubuntu or Linux Mint

Pithos is available in the official Ubuntu repositories, but that's a pretty old version. To install Pithos 1.1.0 in Ubuntu 15.04 or Pithos 1.0.2 in Ubuntu 14.10 or 14.04 / Linux Mint 17.1 or 17, you can use the official Pithos PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pithos/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install pithos

Arch Linux users can install Pithos via AUR.

For other Linux distributions, see the install section from the Pithos homepage.

Install Asunder CD Ripper 2.5 In Ubuntu Via PPA

Asunder is a GTK2 Audio CD ripper and encoder for Linux. It can be used to save tracks from Audio CDs and encode them in various popular audio formats such as MP3, OGG, FLAC, WavPack, WAV, Musepack, Opus, AAC and Monkey's Audio.

The application can retrieve tags from CDDB (with configurable server address, proxy support), lets you configure the filename formats and much more.

Asunder preferences - Encode

Asunder features:
  • Can save audio tracks as WAV, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, Opus, Wavpack, Musepack, AAC, and Monkey's audio files;
  • Uses CDDB to name and tag each track;
  • Creates M3U playlists;
  • Can encode to multiple formats in one session;
  • Simultaneous rip and encode;
  • Allows for each track to be by a different artist;
  • Does not require a specific desktop environment.

Asunder is available in the official Ubuntu repositories, but it's a pretty old version (2.2 for Trusty and Saucy and 2.1 for Precise - the latest Asunder version being 2.5). failsdownloads reader N. W. has asked me to upload the latest Asunder to a PPA so I have backported Asunder 2.5 from Debian (same version is also available in Ubuntu 14.10) to Ubuntu 14.04, 13.10 and 12.04.

I've tested the latest Asunder 2.5 in Ubuntu 14.04 and it worked great but, because I can't test it properly under older Ubuntu versions, I can't guarantee that it will work (in theory there's no reason it wouldn't work but anyway). That's why I've uploaded it to the failsdownloads Unreleased / Backports PPA.

Changes in Asunder 2.5 (compared to the version available in the Ubuntu 14.04 repositories - 2.2):
  • Can now encode into OPUS;
  • Allow metadata to contain invalid filesystem characters (e.g. "Artist" can contain punctuation like "J. S. Bach");
  • AAC files are now tagged using neroAacTag (instead of no tags at all)
  • Dots are now allowed in filenames;
  • Added the application to the list of apps for audio CDs in Gnome;
  • Added support for XDG_CACHE_HOME;
  • Fixed some memory corruption bugs that may have caused crashes and undefined behaviour;
  • Fixed the eject functionality to be more reliable;
  • Fixed a bug where the CDDB info from a removed disk still showed up in a newly inserted disk;
  • Fixed two major bugs that caused Asunder to hang while ripping.

A complete changelog can be found HERE.

Install the latest Asunder Audio CD ripper in Ubuntu via PPA

As I was saying, Asunder is already available in the official Ubuntu repositories, but it's a pretty old version. If you prefer this official Asunder package, install it by clicking the button below:

Available in Ubuntu Software Center

Or, via command line:
sudo apt-get install asunder

To install the latest Asunder (2.5 at the time I'm writing this article) in Ubuntu by using the failsdownloads Unreleased / Backports PPA, copy/paste the following commands in a terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:failsdownloadsteam/unstable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install asunder
If you don't want to add the PPA, grab the deb file from HERE.

Extract Individual Tracks From Audio CD Images With Flacon

Flacon is a Qt tool which can be used to extract individual tracks from audio CD images which contain an entire album, such as WavPack, APE, FLAC, WAV or True Audio, based on the information provided in the CUE file.

Flacon

The application provides output format-specific settings: you can set the output quality, compression and so on as well as ReplayGain, either per album or per track.

Another useful Flacon feature is its ability to tag the resulting tracks, either based on the information provided in the CUE file or manually.

Complete Flacon feature list:
  • supports the following input formats: WAV, FLAC, APE, WavPack, True Audio (TTA).
  • supported output formats: LAC, WAV, WavPack, AAC, OGG, MP3 and Opus (with the latest Flacon 1.2.0) with preset and quality settings, etc.;
  • replay Gain analysis (album-gain and track-gain modes);
  • multi-threaded conversion process;
  • automatic character set detection for CUE files;
  • automatially tag resulting track files;

Flacon 1.2.0, released recently, brings Qt5 support along with Opus output support. However, please note that the packages available in the official Flacon PPA are still built with Qt4.

Install Flacon in Ubuntu or Linux Mint

To install Flacon in Ubuntu or Linux Mint, you can use its official PPA. To add the PPA and install the application, use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:flacon/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install flacon
For other Linux distributions, see the Flacon downloads page.

Pandora Linux Client `Pithos` 1.0 Released, Install It In Ubuntu 14.04

Pithos, a Pandora.com Linux client, was updated to version 1.0 recently. With this release, Pithos was ported to Python 3, GTK3 and GStreamer 1.0 but that's not all that's new - there are also some new features as well as a new app icon.

Pithos Pandora client for Ubuntu

Pandora is a music streaming and recommendation service that's only available in the United States, Australia and New Zealand. You can use it in any other country with an US proxy, VPN or a DNS service such as Unlocator (for free alternatives, see the comments).

Pithos features:
  • switch between Pandora stations;
  • Cover Art;
  • thumbs up / thumbs down / tired of this song options;
  • desktop integration: Ubuntu AppIndicator, notifications;
  • allows editing QuickMix and creating stations;
  • media key support;
  • proxy support;
  • last.fm scrobblling.

Changes in the latest Pithos 1.0:
  • ported to Python3, GTK3 and Gstreamer 1.0;
  • new icons;
  • various UI changes;
  • added indication when songs are replaced by ads;
  • added support for Proxy Auto-Config;
  • display song bitrate;
  • show play/pause and skip actions in notifications (this doesn't work with Ubuntu's notifications);
  • various bug fixes: fixed buffering bug, handle PLAYLIST_EXCEEDED error, improved error handling with invalid album art url and more.

Also, with version 1.0, Pithos should work on Windows, but this is not officially supported yet.

Note that currently there's a bug in the Ubuntu Sound Menu which is triggered by Pithos: when using Pithos, the Ubuntu Sound Menu stops working - until this is fixed, a work-around to get the Sound indicator to work again is to log out and log back in or to restart the Unity panel using the following command: "restart unity-panel-service".

Install Pithos 1.0 in Ubuntu 14.04

Pithos 1.0 is available in its official PPA for Ubuntu 14.04 only (an older version of Pithos is available in the PPA as well as in the official Ubuntu repositories)!. Add the PPA and install Pithos 1.0 by using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pithos/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install pithos

Arch Linux users can install Pithos 1.0 via AUR.

For installing Pithos in Fedora (via RPMFusion) or how to install it from source, see the INSTALL section from the Pithos homepage.

If you encounter bugs, report them @ GitHub.

Thanks to Jason for the tip!
