Official Atom 64bit RPM And DEB Packages Available For Download [Quick Update]

I'm sure many Atom users already know this, but I didn't get to write an article about it, so here's a quick update: the Atom developers have started providing 64bit DEB packages for more than a month. Also, 4 days ago, they added official 64bit RPM packages.

Of course, this doesn't mean I'll stop maintaining Atom in the failsdownloads Ubuntu Atom PPA - that's still useful because it makes it easier to update Atom and also, because the PPA offers 32bit packages, which the Atom website doesn't provide for now.

For those not familiar with Atom, this is a "hackable text editor for the 21st Century" developed by GitHub, which is currently in beta. The text editor features Node.js integration, allowing you to seamlessly mix usage of Node and browser APIs. And of course, since it's developed by GitHub, it features built-in Git integration.

PPA Updates: Atraci 0.6.0, Atom 0.123.0, Brackets 0.42, GPaste 3.10.3 And 3.12.2, Minitube 2.2, Oracle JDK 7u67 And More

As you might have noticed, I was on holiday* until today and because of that, there were no new articles on failsdownloads and no updates for the failsdownloads PPAs. Today I updated the PPA packages for most applications that had a new release while I was away, and to speed things up, below you'll find a quick list with what was updated / what's new.

Notes:

there are no installation instructions in the article for the apps below. Instead, you'll find links to articles explaining how to install those applications in Ubuntu / Linux Mint.
as a reminder, only Ubuntu 14.04 and 12.04 are still supported by Canonical (and of course, 14.10, which is currently under development) / Linux Mint 17 Qiana and Linux Mint 13 Maya. Launchpad PPAs don't support other Ubuntu / Linux Mint releases any more.

That said, let's proceed with the updates.

Atom 0.123.0, an open source "hackable text editor for the 21st Century" developed by GitHub, which is currently in beta:

The maximized state of the window is now properly restored on launch;
The language-mustache package is now bundled by default;
Added a button to the Incompatible Packages view that reloads Atom and rechecks all the installed packages for compatibility. This is also available from the command palette;
Atom's Chrome version has been upgraded from 31 to 36;
Atom's Node version has been upgraded from 0.11.10 to 0.11.13;
Support for number pad keybindings have been removed. Number pad keys will now resolve to their equivalent keystroke as if they were pressed on the main keyboard area. You should remove the num- modifier from any keystrokes in your ~/.atom/keymap.cson file;
Fixed an issue on Linux where tabs could not be dragged between windows;
You can now delete a bracket and its matching pair at the same time using ctrl-backspace on Mac and alt-ctrl-backspace on Linux and Windows;
ctrl-shift-Z is now mapped to core:redo on Linux;
Atom now ships with a light version of the Base16 Tomorrow syntax theme;
Added a bunch of new Go snippets;

Atraci 0.6.0, a new open source music player which uses YouTube as a source:

Brackets 0.42, an open-source code editor for web design and development built on top of web technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript:

Theme support: Brackets now has built-in support for editor themes, and includes default light and dark themes. Additional themes can be installed via Extension Manager;
Replace in Files: Check/Uncheck All Matches for a File: When doing a batch or multi-file replace, you can now check/uncheck the matches for an entire file;
Change Language Mode: Change the language mode for an individual file by selecting the language from the dropdown menu in the status bar
Turn off Code Hints: New preferences to disable all code hints or hints from an individual provider;
Drag and Drop Installation of Extensions: Install extensions by dragging zip files onto the Extension Manager dialog.

GPaste 3.12.2 (for GNOME 3.12 / Ubuntu 14.10 only) and 3.10.3 (for GNOME 3.10 / Ubuntu 14.04), a clipboard manager which was initially created for GNOME Shell, but which now also ships with an Ubuntu AppIndicator:

Desktop files have been fixed;
Fixes for the ubuntu app-indicator;
Keybinding to mark an item as being a password;
Misc bugfixes.

Minitube 2.2, a native YouTube client for the desktop:

Subscriptions context menu: Unsubscribe, Mark as Watched;
Added --stop-after-this command line switch;
Added Stop After This Video Unity & Gnome 3 action;
Fixed painting errors when scrolling playlist on Linux;
Fixed bug with dragging playlist items from the thumbnail;
Fixed some videos not playing.

Oracle JDK 7u67: according to the release notes, this update includes only a bug fix for a regression - java_arguments not accepted after update to 7u65.

Y PPA Manager 2014.08.18: the search feature stopped working while I was on holiday due to a change in Launchpad.net's code. This issue was fixed with the update released today.

Other packages from the failsdownloads PPAs updated today include: FreshPlayer Plugin (Git pull), Tor Browser 3.6.4, KKEdit 0.2.2, Wimlib 1.7.1 and youtube-dl 2014.08.10.

* In case you're wondering why I didn't announce that I'm on holiday well, that's because I did that a while back and the website was filled with spam comments and also, the number of attempts to hack my online accounts increased considerably. That's why I stopped announcing it publicly. Sorry about that!

Atom Text Editor Ubuntu PPA Update

Today I've updated the Atom Ubuntu PPA with the latest Atom code from GitHub and, while the application still doesn't work on 32bit, there is some good news: Atom uses dynamic libraries now, so you might be able to use my builds in Linux distributions other than Ubuntu (Fedora, Debian etc.). The new version also comes with quite a few Linux bug fixes.

Changes in Atom since the previous PPA builds:

apm now has a docs command that opens a package's homepage in the browser that is also aliased to apm home and apm open;
comment blocks at the top of files no longer affect the soft/hard tab settings;
filenames containing only numbers can now be opened;
copy/paste with multiple selections is more intuitive;
packages can be updated from dev builds;
Linux: fixed libudev issues;
Linux: A lot of keybindings work, though Mac-specific keybindings still show up in the preferences;
Linux: Fixed menu bar disappears on old window after opening a new window;
Linux: Ship system dynamic libraries.

I've also fixed some bugs in the Atom packaging:

fixed app menu section;
fixed app folder permissions;
added work-around for Atom using a very large icon in some cases (like KDE's alt-tab with desktop effects disabled - thanks Chris for the help!).

Install Atom text editor in Ubuntu

To install Atom in Ubuntu 14.04, 13.10, or 12.04 (64bit only!) and derivatives (Linux Mint, elementary OS, etc.), use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:failsdownloadsteam/atom
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install atom

If you encounter Node.js related bugs, I recommend using THIS Nodejs PPA.

Non-Ubuntu users: if Atom isn't available for your Linux distribution and you don't know how / don't want to built it from source, you can try (so it may or may not work for you) to use my Atom built - download it from HERE, extract it and double click the "atom" executable.

Install Atom Text Editor In Ubuntu Via PPA [32bit + 64bit]

Atom is an open source "hackable text editor for the 21st Century" developed by GitHub, which is currently in beta.

Until now, to use Atom in Ubuntu you'd have to compile it but I like to make things easier for you so I've built it on my computer (Nodejs apps can't be built directly in Launchpad PPAs because they need to install external dependencies and Launchpad doesn't allow that) and uploaded it to a PPA, for Ubuntu and derivatives: Linux Mint, elementary OS, etc.

Update: initially, Atom could only be built on 64bit (on Linux), but it's now available for both 32bit and 64bit!

Update 2: The Atom devs are now providing Atom 64bit DEB packagees @ GitHub.

Update 3: There are now official Atom 64bit RPM packages available for download.

Atom - a "hackable text editor for the 21st Century"

Atom is text / source code editor based on web technologies and you can tweak its interface with CSS or easily add new features with HTML and Javascript, at least according to its website. The text editor features Node.js integration, allowing you to seamlessly mix usage of Node and browser APIs. And of course, since it's developed by GitHub, it features built-in Git integration.

Other Atom features include:

file system browser;
fuzzy finder for quickly opening files;
fast project-wide search and replace;
multiple cursors and selections;
multiple panes;
snippets;
code folding;
a clean preferences UI;
supports importing TextMate grammars and themes.

As you've probably already noticed, Atom looks a lot like Sublime Text (2/3), a popular, cross-platform text editor that's sadly not open source. In fact, Atom includes many of the features available in Sublime Text - according to THIS, "a lot of the architecture and features have been duplicated from Sublime Text because they're tried and tested. The plugin system works almost the same, but opens up a lot of new features and potential by exposing new APIs too".

Furthermore, both Sublime Text and Atom use a command palette that can be triggered using Ctrl + Shift + P:

Also, both have a package manager, but in Atom, you can browse the packages in a nice UI, learn more about each package, etc.:

Install Atom in Ubuntu (32bit + 64bit) via PPA

Before installing Atom, remember that it's still in beta so you may find bugs or missing / incomplete features!

To install Atom in Ubuntu and derivatives (Linux Mint, elementary OS, etc.), use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:failsdownloadsteam/atom
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install atom

Atom Text Editor Available For Linux 32bit [Ubuntu PPA]

Great news for Ubuntu 32bit users who want to give Atom a try! Atom, the open source "hackable text editor for the 21st Century" developed by GitHub, can now be built for 32bit (on Linux).

As a result, the failsdownloads Atom PPA was updated so there are now Atom packages for both 32bit and 64bit available in the PPA.

Install Atom text editor in Ubuntu / Linux Mint (32bit + 64bit) via PPA

To add the failsdownloads Atom PPA and install Atom text editor in Ubuntu, Linux Mint and derivatives (now available for both 32bit and 64bit), use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:failsdownloadsteam/atom
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install atom

(the PPA is available for Ubuntu 14.10, 14.04, 13.10 and 12.04. Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04 are no longer supported by Canonical!)
