Y PPA Manager 0.9.9.2 Adds Support For Linux Mint 16 And Ubuntu 14.04

Quick update: today I've released Y PPA Manager 0.9.9.2 which adds support for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr and Linux Mint 16 Petra.

Y PPA Manager Linux Mint

This took a while because Linux Mint 16 ships with its own "add-apt-repository -y" command which has a bug and can't be used with gksu or pkexec so I had to find a work-around.

The new version also brings a few bug fixes and a minor but useful new feature (suggested by брайков): an "install" button was added under Manage PPAs -> List Packages so you can now easily install packages listed in PPAs already added on your system, from Y PPA Manager.

For those not familiar with Y PPA Manager, this is a tool that lets you manage Launchpad PPAs: add, remove or purge PPAs, search for packages in Launchpad PPAs as well as other useful features:
  • list the packages available in a PPA added on your system;
  • download packages from PPAs without adding them;
  • PPAs backup / restore, along with all the PPA keys;
  • update single repositories using a command line tool (by the way, when you add a PPA using Y PPA Manager, it's updated without updating all the software sources) called "update-ppa" - usage example: "sudo update-ppa ppa:failsdownloadsteam/java";
  • some options that should help you re-enable the working PPAs when upgrading to a newer Ubuntu / Linux Mint version;
  • remove duplicate PPAs;
  • Unity quicklists / optional AppIndicator;
  • more.

Install Y PPA Manager

To install Y PPA Manager in Ubuntu or Linux Mint, use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:failsdownloadsteam/y-ppa-manager
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install y-ppa-manager

You can submit feature requests or report bugs @ Launchpad.

Y PPA Manager 0.9.9.1 Released With Ubuntu 13.10 Fixes

Today I've released Y PPA Mangager 0.9.9.1 which brings bug fixes for the latest Ubuntu 13.10 as well as some changes on how the tool works.

Y PPA Manager

For those not familiar with Y PPA Manager, this is a tool that lets you easily add, remove or purge PPAs as well as search for packages in Launchpad PPAs, a feature that should be very useful when you can't find a PPA for your favourite app on failsdownloads or other similar websites. Other features include:
  • list the packages available in a PPA added on your system;
  • download packages from PPAs without adding them;
  • PPAs backup / restore, along with all the PPA keys;
  • update single repositories using a command line tool (by the way, when you add a PPA using Y PPA Manager, it's updated without updating all the software sources) called "update-ppa" - usage example: "sudo update-ppa ppa:failsdownloadsteam/java"; this feature was implemented by Satya;
  • some options that should help you re-enable the working PPAs when upgrading to a newer Ubuntu / Linux Mint version;
  • remove duplicate PPAs;
  • Unity quicklists / optional AppIndicator;
  • more.

Based on user feedback, single-click is now used for launching the tools available in the main Y PPA Manager interface. Initially, single-click wasn't even supported by YAD (the front-end used by Y PPA Manager) so this wasn't an option back when I started Y PPA Manager.

Y PPA Manager search

Another change based on user feedback in the latest Y PPA Manager is that the "deep search" is now used as the default search. The "deep search" is much more reliable as it only displays the packages that are available for your Ubuntu version and it also displays the package version and more. The basic (simple) search is still present - in the search dialog, check the "Basic search" box to use it.

Other changes in Y PPA Manager 0.9.9.1:
  • Ubuntu 13.10: fixed policy kit issue with GNOME 3.10;
  • Ubuntu 13.10: work-around for main window issues with GTK 3.8.3+ (this is a bug in GTK3);
  • Ubuntu 13.10: fixed appindicator;
  • Ubuntu 13.10: fixed  package installation from Y PPA Manager;
  • fixed notifications not working sometimes in GNOME Shell;
  • fix backup not backing up /etc/apt/sources.list PPAs (only Launchpad PPAs listed under sources.list are backed up!);
  • added Faience indicator icon (thanks to Giovani Cascaes!).

Install Y PPA Manager

To install Y PPA Manager in Ubuntu, use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:failsdownloadsteam/y-ppa-manager
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install y-ppa-manager

You can submit feature requests or report bugs @ Launchpad.

New Official Proprietary GPU Drivers Ubuntu PPA Released

nvidia

In an effort to make it easier to install the latest proprietary graphics drivers in Ubuntu, a new official PPA was released today.

Currently, the PPA ships Nvidia drivers only (and it's not clear if it will include other packages like AMD drivers, etc.) and is in testing. According to the PPA description, you should wait a few days before using this PPA.

In a message posted on the Ubuntu Desktop mailing list, Jorge O. Castro notes that currently there's no difference between this and the xorg-edgers PPA and that "the real fun begins when new drivers are released".

At the time I'm writing this article, the PPA provides the latest stable Nvidia driver (352.30) as well as the latest beta (355.06), along with libvdpau 1.1 and vdpauinfo 1.0, for Ubuntu 14.04, 15.04 and 15.10, with some older packages (Nvidia 346.87) for Ubuntu 12.04.

To add the PPA (but again, you shouldn't be using it until the PPA description says it's safe to do so), use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
and then use Synaptic / Ubuntu Software Center to install the Nvidia driver version you want to use.

Vivacious features 4 hand crafted folder colors by default. and 10 more installable via the folder-colors package.

Vivacious Colors is based on our tried and true Vibrancy Colors icon theme framework (Folders, Indicators, Actions etc). However we have completely replaced the rounded App icons with a newly re-designed (With some parts built from scratch) Set of vivid and beautiful application icons that come in multiple shapes and are fully SVG.

Vivacious uses Plasma Next icons as a base for our app icons. However we have overhauled the look of nearly everything (to match our design vision) We have also created lots of new icons and redesigned many aspects. The theme has also been built out so nearly all common apps and even uncommon ones "theme" with our theme! A huge thanks to the Emerald Icon theme and Vince Luice for his hard work making Plasma Next Icons more GTK friendly. Vivacious is based on Emerald and Plasma but we look different as we have gone in a different direction.

Fully tested/built to work on most major GTK desktops including:
Unity, Cinnamon, Gnome Shell, Gnome Classic, Mate, Xfce, LXDE, Openbox and more.

How To Upgrade Gnome 3.16 in Ubuntu 15.04 vivid Vervet

How To Upgrade Gnome 3.16 in Ubuntu 15.04 vivid Vervet

GNOME is a desktop environment which is composed entirely of free and open-source software and targets to be cross-platform, i.e. run on multiple operating systems, its main focus being those based on the Linux kernel.

GNOME 3.16 is the latest version of GNOME 3, and is the result of six months' work by the GNOME project. It includes major new features, as well as a large number of smaller improvements and enhancements. The release incorporates 33525 changes, made by approximately 1043 contributors. New features and improvements being introduced in GNOME 3.16 include:

Notifications Reimagined

GNOME 3's notifications system has been overhauled for 3.16. The previous Message Tray has been replaced by a new message list that provides straightforward access to previous notifications, and notification pop-ups (called "banners") have been repositioned in order to make them more noticeable and to prevent them from interfering with applications.

As with the previous notifications design, it is possible to quickly and directly respond to notifications through their pop-up banners. This allows you to do things like quickly snooze an alarm or reply to a chat message.

The calendar drop down, which is accessed from the time indicator in the top bar, has also been redesigned for 3.16. Not only does it now present the notifications history, but it also shows event reminders and world times. This gives a great overview of what is currently happening, as well as what is scheduled for the day. The addition of weather information and birthday reminders is planned for the future.
